Year 3 Curriculum Overview

Autumn 2 - Ice Worlds

This half term has a geography focus and we weill explore the Polar Regions through our Ice Words topic. We will develop our atlas skills and learn about climate zones. We will also learn compass directions and send our learning partners on a trail around the playground using compass point directions. We shall also look at how people live in the Artic and what it takes to survive there. 

To begin with in English, we will be writing reports about Emperor Penguins which we will send to Drusillas. We will spend the day as a penguin to help us learn facts - this also means looking after an egg for the day! Following on from this we will be using the book ‘Ice Trap’. This is based on a true story about Shackleton’s last adventure to the Antarctic.  We will be writing letters and diary entries as Shackleton.  Finally we will read 'Winter's Child' and learn how to use adjectives to write descriptive settings. 

Autumn 1 - The Stone Age

This half term has a history focus where we will be travelling back in time to imagine what it was like to grow up in the Stone Age.  We will also spend some time comparing our lives now to what life was like then. 

Spring 1 - Metal Monsters

We are going to be reading 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. We will base all of our writing and reading on this book. We will have a go at making our own class Iron Man and write our own adventure based story. 

We are looking at forces this half term with a focus on magnetism to link with our work on The Iron Man. We will be comparing and grouping various everyday materials.  We will also try to predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on their poles.

Spring 2- The Great Outdoors

We will be using the text ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne.  In art we  will develop techniques in texture and shading using chalks, charcoals, pencils and crayons.  In geography we will be investigating with Preston Park meets the needs of the local community.

In science we will be looking at the necessary conditions that plants need to grow as well as identifying different species of plants and their parts.

Summer 1 - Romans

We will be looking at Celtic life and the Roman influences on British society.  We will be having a ‘Roman Day’ in school and a real Roman will visit to Bignor Roman Villa. In Art we will be looking at a variety of Roman Mosaics and creating our own. We will also be looking at Roman sculpture culminating in the children designing and making their own tile.  Our English is linked to the Romans.   We will be researching and writing non-chronological reports about Roman life.

Summer 2 - Going Green

We are going to be learning all about how to look after our world. We will learn about how we can 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.' 

In English we will read beautiful book by Gill Lewis called 'Song of the River' and learn how to protect our world through re-wilding.  

In art we will develop our sketching, painting and collaging techiniques by creating our own multimedia flower.
